Carla Lopes
Auxiliary Researcher
Carla holds a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Leicester (UK, 2011). For her postdoc, Carla joined the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa (IPO), a leading hospital in cancer treatment and research, and the multidisciplinary Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), bridging fundamental and clinical research.
She was also an Invited Professor at the Faculty of Sciences in the University of Lisbon. Throughout her career Carla has investigated the regulation of sub-cellular structures, centrosomes and cilia, particularly in the context of human disease: infertility, ciliopathies and cancer. In 2023 Carla joined the iBiMED as an auxiliary researcher. Her research group uses experimental models that mimic human physiology and reconstitute the complex disease microenvironment to uncover mechanisms of centrosome signaling deregulation, with the goal of contributing to the development of clinical tools to improve cancer treatment and prevention.
