
Maria João Carvalho
Researcher PhD
Maria João Carvalho earned her PhD in Biology from the University of Aveiro. In 2012, she joined Professor Tim Walsh's lab at Cardiff University focusing on genomic surveillance of bacterial antimicrobial resistance and its epidemiology.
She was a research associate for the EU’s R-GNOSIS project and lead scientist for the BARNARDS project (Bill & Melinda Gates foundation), which won her the ISF/ESCMID Sepsis Award in 2019. Returning to Portugal, she joined iBiMED in 2019, working on the CANCYL and FunResist projects, focusing on genomic surveillance of microbial eukaryotes. Her interests span Microbiology, Genomics, and Bioinformatics. She also contributes to student supervision, science outreach, and sustainable research practices as a member of the steering committees of iBiMED GreenLab and GreenLabs Portugal.
